A typical user will see up to 2 Mbit / s (mega bits per second) downstream, which is nearly enough to download large files like high definition movies and TV shows in minutes; and up to 256 kbit / s upstream, which allows the user to send small amounts of data such as e-mails very quickly.
Satellite internet makes it possible for remote areas or unpopulated places (e.g. farms and ranches on the prairies) without direct connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to be online at high speeds via satellites orbiting the Earth at low altitude on the North America (~ 20,000 km).
It can be a way to replace old 56kbit / s dial-up or modem internet connections.
Advantages of satellite internet
The main advantage of satellite internet is that it offers high speeds from anywhere in North America from a single provider via landline telephone networks, where cables are often quite far from homes and therefore using a DSL or cable modem connection could be difficult or very expensive.
A second advantage is that compared to portable towers and pylons for 3G wireless service providers, satellite systems have almost no latency because they don't have to communicate through ground stations.
